Yasmin Ahmad Chosen Best Director At 22nd Mff
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The late Yasmin Ahmad was chosen as the best director for her film 'Talentime' at the 22nd Malaysian Film Festival (MFF), here Saturday night.
She won a trophy and a cash prize of RM20,000 which were received by her younger sister.
Yasmin also won the award for the best screen play for the film, for which she also received a trophy and RM15,000 cash prize.
Talentime also won the award for the best supporting actor through Mohd Shafie Naswip who walked away with a trophy and a cash prize of RM10,000.
Earlier at the award presentation held for the first time at the Dewan Canselori Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Talentime was among the four films that received the Special Main Jury Award.
The other three films were 'Kami - The Movie', 'Histeria' and 'Geng: Pengembaraan Bermula'.
Yasmin, 51, died on July 25 at about 11.25 pm after suffering a stroke and brain haemorrhage.
The 22nd MFF also showed a video clip that lasted about two minutes in memory of the film director.
The brief video clip, with actress and singer Adibah Noor as the narrator, showed excerpts of the films and commercials directed by her.
Meanwhile the film 'Papadom' directed by Afdlin Shauki won the best film award for which he received a trophy and a cash prize of RM50,000.
The Best Actor Award was also won by Afdlin, while the Best Actress Award went to Liyana Jasmay, both through the film 'Papadom'.
The best actor and best actress each won a trophy and a cash prize of RM15,000.
The 22nd MFF also chose Omar Man and Mariani Ismail as the winners for the Best Veteran Actor and Best Veteran Actress Awards respectively.
Also present at the ceremony were the Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim.

Yasmin Will Be Remembered For Her Quality Works
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) -- Yasmin Ahmad left a legacy of her works in the film and advertisement arenas, thriving on the themes of love, family ties and comedy against the backdrop of multiracial Malaysia.
Born in Bukit Treh, Muar, Johor on July 1 1958, Yasmin, who graduated in psychology from Newcastle University, United Kingdom, had won local and international creativity awards.
Married to Abdullah Tan Yew Leong, she began her career as a copywriter with Ogilvy & Mather before joining Leo Burnnett as joint creative director in 1993 and rose to become its creative executive director until her death.
Her creativity could be seen in many Petronas' commercials and evoked emotion of the viewers especially during the Aidilfitri celebration which would certainly be missed by viewers this year.
In the filming industry, Yasmin, however, drew much controversy in view of her openness and boldness in analysing social issues.
She was at the mercy of critics since her first movie, "Rabun" was screened in 2003 followed by "Sepet" (2004), "Gubra" (2006), "Mukhsin" (2006), "Muallaf" (2008) and Talentime (2009).
Despite the drawbacks, she also earned rave reviews for "Sepet" which was accorded the Best Film Award and the Best Original Screenplay Award at the Malaysian Film Festival 2005.
"Sepet" also bagged several international awards, namely the Asian Film Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival 2005, the Grand Prix Award at the Creteil International Women's Film Festival in the same year.
"Gubra" won the Best Screenplay award at the Malaysian Film Festival 2006.
"Muhsin" won the Generation kplus - Best Feature Film and the Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk Grand Prix award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
"Mukhsin" also won the Best Asean Film at the Cinemanila International Film Festival 2007.
"Muallaf" won the Asian Film Award - Special Mention at the Tokyo International Film Festival 2008.
While leaving indelible mark at home, Yasmin's movies gained international recognition as they were shown in Berlin, San Francisco, Singapore and at the Cannes Film Festival.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) -- Renowned film and advertising director Yasmin Ahmad died here at about 11.25 pm Saturday night.
Her death was confirmed by Media Prime Group Chief Operations Officer Datuk Seri Ahmad Farid Ridzuan, who was at the Damansara Specialists Hospital, when contacted by Bernama.
Yasmin, 51, collapsed while presenting a working paper at Sri Pentas, the headquarters of the private television station TV3 on Thursday and was rushed to the Damansara Specialists Hospital.
She was reported to have suffered a stroke and brain haemorrhage.

PETALING JAYA: Multi award-winning director Yasmin Ahmad suffered a stroke yesterday when she was at Sri Pentas for a 3pm meeting with Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, her husband Datuk Seri Khalid Mohamad Jiwa and Media Prima representatives for an undisclosed project.
She was taken to the Damansara Specialist Hospital where she underwent a neurosurgical procedure at 5pm. The operation was over at 7.30pm and she was reported to be in a stable condition.
The 51-year-old film and television commercial director, who is Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur's executive creative director, is recuperating at the hospital's intensive care unit.
"According to the surgeon, she's still unconscious. So let her rest," Leo Burnett's managing director Tan Tien Eng said at the hospital.
Yasmin had complained of feeling unwell and collapsed during the meeting. Efforts were made by those at the meeting to resuscitate her but she did not gain consciousness. She was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
Siti, a former ambassador for the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, also lent a hand when it happened together with a panel doctor for TV3.
"Yasmin didn't show any signs of being unwell. Only when she put her hands to the face and slumped on the meeting table that we knew something was wrong," Siti said.
Yasmin's parents, Inom Yon, 74 and Ahmad Hashim, 75, are scheduled to fly from Langkawi to be with her.
Yasmin's maiden effort Rabun was inspired by the lives and love of Mak Inom and Pak Atan.
Yasmin, who is known for her 1Malaysia theme in her TV commercials, made her big screen debut with Sepet in 2004 after the critically acclaimed Rabun. Sepet made waves for its story that combined humour and love that transcended cultural barriers.
Her follow-up films put Malaysian cinema in the limelight when she bagged awards at international film festivals from Hong Kong and Hawaii to Cannes and San Francisco. Among her works include Gubra (2006), Mukhsin (2007), Muallaf (2008) and Talentime (2009).
Yasmin Ahmad will be featured in Crosstalk in the NST tomorrow. She and Datin Shuhaimi Baba offer their views on the recent ruling that films should not feature Mat Rempit and "men in women's clothes".
